Traveling into the past can be exhausting. It can also be exhilarating. Preparation for this kind of travel may require spending years thinking about it, even agonizing over it. You ask yourself endless questions Should I go? Why should I go? Was the past too long ago? What if I go and there's nothing there? Finally I go, and I uncover a wealth of stories ... one major car wreck, small talk about sex, a tale of two guns, and not a hint of regret... Woody Allen, Brigitte Bardot, Buddy Hackett ... and pop singer Neil Sedaka's mother turn up in these pages. And there's a confession about a theft connected to one of them. So Long, Betty and Veronica recalls a dying Borscht Belt culture, ancient bungalow colonies, and burned-down hotels in the Catskills. It's the coming of age story of a New York City boy spending summers in the country. The journey transforms lost experience and integrates it into the present. In a curious way, going back enriches the path forward. So Long, Betty and Veronica is a celebration of people whose wealth of character and generosity of spirit made the past possible.

I read this fine story with great interest, and not just because the author and I had a close personal friendship for many years- the years in college and for some time beyond- just after this story takes place. Though we spent countless hours together there was rarely any talk about our pre-college years. We knew where our friends came from, but we were wrapped up in the present, enjoying our newly-found independence and developing attitudes that would stick with us. We were too young to be nostalgic.Nostalgia creeps up on you. Childhood and the formative years slowly become more meaningful and interesting. You lose touch with old friends, even the ones who had a great impact on your life. Maybe some are still there to reach out to, or maybe they've passed away. Maybe the places are still there, or have changed beyond recognition. But it's the wanting to know that becomes irresistible. That's where this story comes into play. It takes some intestinal fortitude to actually physically go back as Lou did. He explains that perfectly here.
And to have the privilege of being invited along on this journey, to read the descriptions of the people and the community and of Lou's experience of it all is a real treat. I know him better than ever now. My first thought was “where are the drawings?” since the author draws masterfully. But once engrossed in the words I saw that pictures weren't necessary. He places you right there in every episode. You can hear the crashing dishes and feel the trembling fear of the cemetery. I relived many similar episodes from my life while reading this, some compartmentalized far away from the present.
I had never been to the Catskills until reading this book. But I've been there now.

Relived my childhood
I enjoyed So Long, Betty and Veronica. it's a great, sweet read about a time and a place now lost to history and lore.
Wonderful read. Brought back so many memories. Can't wait for his next book!
honest, funny, touching nostalgia about a lost piece of americana
I've heard of summers in the Catskills but never experienced - until I read this book. Warm, funny, sweet, insightful.
Thank you for writing this gem. I enjoyed every passage, every page, every description. You brought my memories to life.
This book is a nostalgic journey into a time that I myself never knew. It's charm draws you in from the beginning and holds your attention until the end. The episodic story telling of Ferreri allows you to read for only a few minutes in order to get a self contained story. If you set the book down there, you would leave quite satisfied, but why would you want to? The continuity and eloquence of each chapter keep the pages turning until the end, which is a little like finishing the last French fry; you're left craving more.
