When a police chief who craves stability meets a free-thinking, colorful college professor, neither anticipate the fireworks that light up the night...
After a mugging in grad school left her with an irrational fear of the night not even her PhD in psychology has helped overcome, Sadie Wren is sure she’s found an idyllic, safe place in Cottonbloom. When a break-in at her house shatters her sense of safety, gruff, protective Thaddeus Preston storms into her life. On the surface, they have little in common, but a loneliness she’s only too familiar with hides behind his infrequent smiles. But based on her knowledge of the human psyche, Sadie is convinced her infatuation with Thad will burn out as quickly as it flared.
As the Chief of Police of Cottonbloom, Mississippi, Thaddeus Preston maintains a strict control on everything in the small town—himself included. With an older brother serving time for a crime Thad committed when he was just a kid, he lives a life of penance, not allowing anyone to get close. When a reported lurker turns into a real threat, Thad is determined to restore order as quickly as possible and get back to his virtual jail.
But Thad’s brother gets out on probation just as Sadie and the town turns to him for protection. His tidy, barren life spins into chaos, and the only thing that makes sense is the one woman who shouldn’t.

Nice read, but not enough substance to the story. Profanity didn't help either. Would have been a sweet story if the ugly language had been omitted and the sex not so explicit.Product details

Light Up the Night A Cottonbloom Novel edition by Laura Trentham Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
First page of the book had errors (He put down his Clayton??) and the most distracting usage of commas. I know it sounds really silly to point out commas but I almost didn't give the book a chance because word flow was just weird because of it. Perhaps I should have used this as a omen to stop and pick up a new book because errors aside there was no true substance to the plot. Thad and Sadie had okay chemistry but the love story was rushed, the mystery of the break in was rushed, Thadd's relationship with Clayton was rushed, and Sadie's challenges with combating her fear was rushed. I am not sure why those plot elements were a part of the love story if the author is not going to do anything with it. I don't plan to read another by this Author.
I almost quit reading this on the first page. The very first sentence had errors in it. "...before laying his Clayton wouldhead, on the back of his swivel chair..." In the second paragraph the following grammar error "...chances were good his brother, be a free man." After figuring the"wouldhead" needed to be half in the second paragraph with the name "Clayton" I read on. Being dyslexic helped straighten out the scrambled sentences. Other than the opening mess, I only spotted one other grammar error. "...hundreds of time."
The story was short and the author didn't waste any time getting H and h together. Another few chapters might have made a more satisfying story with more character growth. They got where they needed to be but it was abrupt.
Although I am a voracious romance reader, this is my first time reading a story by Laura Trentham. This is a delightful character driven novella. I found both Chad and Sadie to be compelling. Be warned, however, that the first sentence makes no sense.
"Thaddeus Preston read through the week-old e-mail one more time before laying his Clayton, wouldhead on the back of his swivel chair and staring up at the pockmarked tiles of his office." Laying his Clayton? Wouldhead? Clayton Wouldhead? I scratched my own head over this for a couple of minutes. Ooph! This is followed by a sentence in the second paragraph that makes no sense. At that point, I just about deleted the novella from my reader. Given the rest of the well written story, I can only assume this was some kind of formatting glitch. Trentham has a way with words and a better than average vocabularly. There is a disappointing tendency among romance authors to assume their audience are less literate than the usual reader.
"His brain seemed to be giving an ironic handclap to his sexually addled thought process."
"The darkened maw of the room beckoned."
"He swung his feet to the floor and ruffled his hair before he stood and reached for his pants, his butt on display. Meanwhile she had the sheet to her chin in a death clutch." Ha!
Both lead characters come with interesting back stories, nothing TSTL or any of the usual tropes. I will certainly be seeing what else Trentham has written. You should know that there is explicit sex (well done) so if that is an issue for you, be warned. As well, the kindle version ends at 78% which is always a bit of a shocker if you are expected the story to go longer.
After reading a series of duds, it was great to find a book that made me want to read more. This is definitely worth a try.
When Thaddeus Preston responds to the breaking and entering of a home in his jurisdiction, the last thing he expects to find is a woman who piques his personal interest. Sadie Wren makes him want something he's denied himself for a decade. They don't seem to have much in common, but Thad can't help but open up to her and Sadie, in turn, gives him a sense of relief and comfort that he hasn't experienced in so long. He's sworn to protect her, but it goes beyond his duty as the chief of police, and Sadie is more than grateful, especially after the trauma that she experienced in graduate school. They're both tentative and tempted, but is this a case of nothing more than convenience? Will Thad's older brother Clayton being released on probation lead to chaos in Thad's controlled life?
I never would have expected the kind of back story that Thad had, but when it comes to Laura Trentham's books, I've learned to expect two things exemplary storytelling and to not expect the usual and mundane. Sadie is a new character that's easy to welcome to the Cottonbloom fold, and she, too, has a story to tell. Clearly, these two need some healing--sexual and otherwise--and I prefer to see their coming together as more of fate than convenience. They were able to find their footing in order to move forward together. I really liked Clayton and I hope that he gets a chance to tell his own story in the new set of Cottonbloom stories. Oh yes. More Cottonbloom! When I saw that there were going to be three new books coming out between 2017 and 2018, the grin on my face couldn't be helped. Light Up the Night starts the whole night-themed titles quite nicely indeed. This free novella gets five stars. ♥
Nice read, but not enough substance to the story. Profanity didn't help either. Would have been a sweet story if the ugly language had been omitted and the sex not so explicit.
